Growing up, race car kits with their tracks and controls were really hot stuff and every little boy wanted one. The thing is, even as grown men things haven’t changed much. Anki, a company that specializes in really cool AI gizmos have developed just what the little boy in every grown man wants – a really cool racing kit that can be controlled via an iOS device.
Anki DRIVE is already available for purchase and ships with 2 cars in the bundle for a price of $199 with a $69 pricing for any additional cars you want. The kit was showcased at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference this year. The kit includes a portable mat with a track and sensors. It’s been compared to Hot Wheels style racing tracks. The cars are designed to act in the same way you’d expect your onscreen cars to do in the mobile version. Blocking opponents, overtaking etc. are precisely what the kit and corresponding iOS app let you do. The app also lets users adjust conditions of the race and also gives you the use of virtual weapons. Depending on who you hit or if you’re attacked your car on the track will react the same way like spinning out etc. Add-ons and power ups for defense and speed boosts can also be applied and will alter the effects of the real-world cars as well. It’s a cool set up but what would you be looking at – the cars on the track or the ones on my phone/tablet’s display? It’s a bit distracting, I’m not sure which one though. Check out the video demo.
