AOL’s still makes $150 mn in quarterly operating income, via dial-up!
We all forgot the days when the modest modem screamed and shrieked its way through. Now, however is the age of LTE connectivity and the likes, some would think, with no room for age-old connectivity solutions. However, AOL still manages to not only survive but make some big numbers through its dial-up services – yes, they still exist. According to Henry Blodget of Business Insider, the AOL dial-up subscription service still constitutes the company’s major money making with amortization of $158.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The report claims that the company, which may have well done away with a significant chunk of infrastructure so old, actually manages $500 million a year! This is quite stunning a read and as unbelievable as any mummy-coming-to-life story. Who, some may wonder, derive the pleasures of connectivity through this service? It’s time to snoop around.
