The future is here. No longer do you need to swing open the door of your car and walk to the gas pump to fill up your gas-guzzler’s starving belly with fuel. No longer do you need to just stand there and look around as your car fills up, leaving you with nothing to do for quite a few precious moments. Thanks to a cooperative effort between Husky and Fuelmatics, this automatic fuel-filling robot technology was demonstrated at the 2013 Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI) convention in Atlanta. The robot is exactly what its name states it to be, an intelligent and automated machine that locates the fuel filler cap and uses a suction cup to open it. The robot then inserts one of three nozzles into the vehicle’s fuel neck through a capless insert and begins fuelling the car!
A vacuum-based shutoff system stops the fueling when the tank is topped off, preventing fuel spills and damages. Peter Ward of Glasgow Equipment Services, a former president of PEI, says, “We feel this will be a great product for the future.” Well, one thing’s for sure. We agree with Ward and certainly look forward to using this technology first-hand the next time we take our Honday for a top-up!
