LG files injunction to ban BMW, Audi sales in South Korea over patent spat with Osram

The ongoing patent-infringement war between LG and Osram is now turning ugly for BMW and Audi in South Korea. LG has filed an injunction seeking a ban on BMW and Audi car sales for they use Osram’s lighting products which infringe seven of its patents relating to LED chips and packaging technologies.. This is certainly pinching the automakers for the Korean markets have recently turned to be lucrative owing to the free-trade deal signed with European Union in July.

This injunction plea by LG and its component affiliate LG Innotek follows an earlier complain that was filed with the South Korean trade commission in July to halt imports of LED products from Siemens lightbult unit Osram. The legal spat was first ignited when Osram claimed that Samsung and LG infringed its patents on white and surface mountable LEDs. LG then joined Samsung to countersue the German company’s local arm in Korea.
