How many times do we get stuck behind busses and 18-wheelers on narrow roads and are forced to make a blind overtaking maneuver to get past it. Those situations are not only irritating but extremely dangerous as many of them end up into fatal accidents. Researchers from University of Porto in Portugal have come with a technology that’ll help drivers stuck behind larger commercial vehicles to safely overtake them. Named the ‘See-Through-System’ or STS, it consists of an inter-vehicular communication system that plays a pivotal role in the whole technology.
In a scenario where a small car gets stuck behind a larger commercial vehicle, they both communicate with each other using the inter-vehicular communication system. The webcam of the windshield of the large vehicle, facing forward, transmits the video feed to the car behind which is played on a small yet light heads up display (HUD) which acts like a virtual windshield. The system uses 802.11p standard wireless communication so there is very little delay making it safe for use. The STS has been tested in a driving simulator as well as on the roads. Check out the video posted by the team to see how it actually works.
