In the world of cut-throat competition, companies often have to stray off the beaten path to gain competitive edge over others. Banality of cinema promotion is broken every once in a while by ad campaigns that choose not to follow the tried and tested path and rather offer something refreshing, something amazing. Offering free goodies to capture the attention of audience might be an old trick, but as an ‘industry first’, to promote ‘The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug’ that’ll hit the cinemas on the 13th this month, Microsoft and Warner Bros are offering a free blueprint to 3D print The Key of Erebor from the film as a part of its new ad campaign.

There is nothing more basic than a simple piece of paper folded into a kickass plane, but it’s always fun. Some fly, some nosedive, some spiral out of control; and at best, in the name of upgrade, all we can do is to change the angle of the flaps to make it fly a little better. How about giving it a motor and control it using a smartphone? I mean, how cool does that sound? A kickstarter project named PowerUp 3.0 can turn mundane paper planes into proper flying machines. Designed by Shai Goitein, the PowerUp 3.0 is a small module that clips onto a body of a classic paper plane forming its frame. The module has a small propeller and a rudder on the back end and a Bluetooth connection hub on the front.

There was a time where the most powerful button in all our music accessories was that orange button, that we would so seldom use, to record something off a player. This all new modern-day avatar of the classic player and recorder pays fitting tribute to that marvel of yesteryear. It comes all in red, with true retro nerve heeded. The difference here being that the former compartment for the cassette now houses you all new iPhone. So you play music the old-fashioned way on your swanky new device. There’s science and there’s art. And when they mingle we have a beautiful, colorful experience in store. We’ve all tried pulling strings on Newton’s Cradle but the one we have here is labeled ‘Kinetic Light’. Newton’s theory focused on the Kinetic energy that led the balls to transmit it from the first ball to the penultimate one, eventually triggering off the last one. The kinetic energy passing through the queued balls is represented by a different colored light. The slow motion capture of the even captures the transfer of energy quite brilliantly. The Newton Cradle isn’t something plain, grey and simple anymore. You could use it as a great party prop if psychedelic is what you dig.

If you’re not into designing and typography then you’d love to know that Helvetica is a typeface that’s as good as standard in most leading text editors today. Following up from the 2007 movie, this is yet another memory-refresher, letting us know how precious and brilliantly crafted fonts really are. So if you’re a sucker for something as wild as German Blackletter or something as simple as Arial, you wouldn’t be crucified for pledging allegiance to Helvetica. Then arises the question of the essence of the perfume. Branding company Guts and Glory have rolled out this particular perfume, comprising of only the purest and most essential elements. So do not be surprised if the only whiff you gain is that of water. Says one developer of the product, “(The perfume) is about a larger idea. Modernism and the origin of typeface originated in the idea that content, not font or typography, is important. Our product is a comment on the perfume industry and water, and its commercialization”.

If you weren’t happy with the ongoing Lego themes and if George Lucas did succeed in getting you addicted to out-worldly adventures then the Lego Star Wars 10225 R2D2 set is something you should totally own! R2-D2 is undoubtedly everyone’s favorite droid from the Star Wars franchise and lovingly makes up for all the cold-hearted bad-boy fanboy mileage that Darth Vader commands. There is something good and pleasant to take away and R2-D2 is something that could spread the message of not being evil or depending on an all-controlling force, to kids. This one’s high on detail as well, with a retractable third leg, a universal computer interface arm in the front panels that opens up and a circular saw, a rotating head and 2 fold-out front spacecraft linkage control arms. Pretty cool, huh?

Art is where the idiot box it. It’s the fact in today’s day and age and well, we’re not complaining this time. Elin Jonsson has created these cool Art Nouveau renditions that pay tribute to the significant ladies from the Game of Thrones series. We have most of our favorite women in there. There is fine detailing within the bigger picture as well with a morbid Eddard Stark under the feet of Lady Stark and the Highgarden darling bathed in roses. Sansa is flanked with the lustful eyes of Little Finger undressing her with his mere gaze, while Daenerys seems to be missing the amazing black-scaled Drogon.

We’re all stocking up for the winter holidays and the fun things we do in this frigid season, so why not just dig into something geekier? This is NewLaunches after all and even a banana with a chip inside has us paying attention. The Snowboarding Boots by Nike come as a complete surprise to those who are used to seeing such stitched by local cobblers and shoe-weavers, not only because they are Winter boots and from Nike, but also because they have a very prominent LED on them. Snowboarding wouldn’t be such a ‘dark’ affair anymore and even crashing would be stylish with these on. Called the LunarENDOR QS, the boots offer a light-up swoosh that is made up by 30 LEDs.

Foldable bikes are turning into quite a rage these days. After all, who wouldn’t want to get off a bicycle, fold it, stare cheekily back at everyone who’s staring at you and walk away with your mode of transport neatly tucked under your arm, right? Here’s a foldable helmet to go with your foldable bike! Christened the Morpher, this helmet, which has been called a portable helmet, though every helmet out there is indeed a portable helmet, is the brainchild of Jeff Woolf. What keeps this one away from the rest however, is the fact that this helmet folds flat!
