BlackBerry Does the Unthinkable, Announced Android App Support for PlayBook

BlackBerry has got the tinsel town of tablets talking over its official word on support for Android apps for PlayBook. It is good news but still makes me wonder what exactly drove RIM to do this for its very first tablet. Probably this is their strategy to have edge over the existing offerings for as now of neither Android or iOS driven tablets have come up with such cross-company support. This feature wouldn’t go live when the tablet launches but sometime around summer. RIM says that both Android and Java apps will run on the PlayBook via two optional “app players.” This will allow the users to easily download apps from the Blackberry App World.

As of now only Android 2.3 applications will be compatible with RIM’s OS. With this, the company also announced support for cross-platform game engines from Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies. So RIM has showed its love for Airplay and Unity 3 Games but not “i”-apps as yet.
