This cool new technology called cholesteric liquid crystal display (ChLCD) can revolutionize both, cellphone usage as well as design. The very thought of having the entire surface of the phone as a display screen, opens up new doors to ideas that can give touch technology a complete facelift. Developed by Kent Technologies, this technology uses reflection of light and forms three layers, red, green and blue. These combine and form the image on the screen using roll-to-roll technology. These layers are separated by thin resin layers so that the crystals are not damaged when the phone is bent. This forms the similar basis for electronic paper.
ChLCD technology is also dubbed as Electronic Skin. A future version of the same is said to display 4000 colors. The ChLCD display will soon be seen on a variety of gizmos around us, especially wrist watches that serve multiple purposes. It was on display at SID Display Week 2009.
