I find it really strange that Apple would make something as strangely cumbersome as the iPad and not design a stand for it. Still, it leaves the market open for a wealth of design competitors, including Twelvesouth, whose Compass Stand really does resemble those little tools we all enjoyed spinning around and sticking in our friends’ legs during math class. The Compass Stand has two legs, one of which splits in the middle and splays, resulting in a tripod kind of stand. There are even little “hands” to hold the iPad in place. If you wish to use the iPad for typing or what-not, there is another “foot” that will prop it at a low angle. When the stand’s limbs are all snapped shut, it is roughly an inch wide, a lot more convenient than the oddly sized iPad. The stand also has its own carry case, which the iPad also lacks. The Compass Stand costs $40 and is available to buy at twelvesouth.com.
