Back in 2009 a Japanese research institute called Riken introduced us to RIBA, a rather cute looking bear-like nursemaid that put the term “bear-hug” in its best possible context. Designed to be a robotic nurse, this “Doctors” little (not so little actually) helper was upgraded to the RIBA-II in 2011 with advanced capabilities. The institute has, since then, expanded the evolution of this technology and announced Robear, their latest iteration of the friendly bear-like nurse maid.
Designed to help the elderly, injured, et al with various tasks including getting in and out of bed, this 309 pound robo-caregiver can even carry patients to and from their wheel-chairs. Although previous editions were designed on the same lines, Robear’s functionality has been upgraded to offer a slightly better experience, in other words, he’s learned to be a little gentler with people. Thanks to his upgraded tech and feedback sensors (better torque sensors and Smart Rubber capacitance-type tactile sensors), Riken says that they will allow Robear to perform with softer movements and power-intensive tasks such as lifting patients without endangering them will also be better handled. The idea is to give the elderly a little more independence so they don’t necessarily need to rely on a human to always be around. Isn’t this how the movie iRobot began? Just saying.
