The blind and the visually impaired do have their fair share of problems and Japanese manufacturer Fujitsu has come up with a practical way to help these individuals get around their homes easily. With help from Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Fujitsu is currently developing an indoor support system for the blind that uses a concept similar to GPS called ultra wide band (UWB) technology with a smartphone providing real-time positioning data with audio-instructions. Using a bunch of strategically-placed base stations that hook up with the mobile stations indoors and a computer to run it all, the system works with an accurately with an error range of below 30cms, one we foresee to be wiped out as the technology develops in future!
