The motoring subsidy of Fujitsu has developed a “car-mounted system capable of recording the scene and sounds of a traffic accident”. In a day and age where traffic sense has gone for a toss, this ‘Black Box’ seems an honest solution. With the help of this, cops will be able to find out what exactly happened 12 seconds before and 8 seconds after an accident. The recording includes sound and image footage. The camera’s 134-degree wide-angle lens allows the DREC1000 to “capture images of a collision diagonally to the front of the car.” The device comes to life when it detects any gravitational change, such as sudden braking or smashing another car as it is fitted with a sensor. The success of the Traffic Accident Recorder for cars, should it be marketed in the States, depends on whether it clears constitutional issues of privacy.
The Fujitsu Traffic Accident Recorder costs about 59,850 yen (£264/$514) and is available in Japan.
