Galaxy Nexus not getting KitKat, disgruntled users send Pichai petition with 14,000 signatures

In a rather surprising turn of events post Google’s launch ofthe Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat, it seems like Galaxy Nexus users have been left devastated and very disappointed. The reason being Google has stated that the Galaxy Nexus will not be getting the 4.4 update. I have to say that being a former Galaxy Nexus owner myself, it really is a blow to the chest. For one thing it’s a Nexus device with specifications that would very easily allow it to run the new OS that’s touted to run on low-end Android devices. Secondly, it’s a Nexus device period!

According to Google, the Galaxy Nexus being over 18-months old, falls a little short of their support window. Another reason behind the odd decision is that chip makers for the Galaxy Nexus, Texas Instruments, isn’t really making smartphone chips anymore so with the 4.4 update, drivers etc. might be difficult to come by. One user, Max Duckwitz, started a petition that managed to get 14,000 signatures and 3,400 comments that were printed and shipped out to Sundar Pichai, Senior VP for Android, Chrome & Apps. Let’s hope he gives it some serious thought.

I agree with the reports about the possibility that Google could easily find a way of offering the 4.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus without a hassle, if they wanted to. Naturally the Android community will be working their magic to bring all of the KitKat flavor to the device via ROMs and hacks but it would have been better to get the real thing. Denying loyal fans and Galaxy Nexus users the “right” to get an official Google update is wrong and I do hope Google reconsiders. This is not Apple after all and even they offer their updates to older device.
