It’s quite a paradox, you zip around town in a SUV that causes all kinds of environmental damage, but the seat covers are eco-friendly! It’s like killing a bird but telling it that the death will be painless. How lame is that! The story is that Ford is coming out with it’s 2008 Escape Hybrid which boasts of seat fabric made from discarded plastic and polyester fabrics “that would have otherwise ended up in landfills.” The same covers will be available in the not-so-eco-friendly gas version too. Even funnier is the tag that accompanies the covers that states: “The new fabric offers the same feel and durability of virgin-fiber fabrics, and was subjected to a battery of tests to verify its durability, seam strength, color consistency, and even new-car smell.” Giving the devil the due, we must laud Ford for at least coming out with a hybrid vehicle-The 34-mpg hybrid small SUV Escape.
Fast facts state that Escape will eliminate the equivalent of 1.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide and 7million kilowatt-hours of electricity consumption while saving 600,000 gallons of water. All said and done, eco-friendly covers cannot offset the negative impact of the greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles. But like they say every drop makes the ocean. Kudos to Ford and InterfaceFabric (manufacturers of the fabric) for making an attempt at being that drop.
