Green Crocs Factory in Japan uses Robots for Sorting Seedlings

green-crocs-factory-0The Osaka Prefecture University in Japan, the first completely artificial light type plant factory which uses Philips GreenPower LED Power module for lighting, conducted the tour of “Green Crocs new generation pre-tours of plant factory” on 19th of September. The very innovative Green Crocs new generation plant factory will be capable of producing leafy vegetables of up to a whopping 5,000 shares per day. They have adopted for the very first time in the world, this brand new technology called the “seedling diagnostic system” and also the country’s first ‘automatic transportation system’. In the seedling diagnostic system, the seedlings are put against the blue light LED which helps light to penetrate to the chlorophyll pigment of the plant. This helps in segregating the superior quality seedling with high chlorophyll fluorescence intensity, which will develop into good quality green leafy vegetables.

The ‘automatic transportation system’ uses robots to transplant seedlings into the mobile bed. The cultivations room is 30 meters in length, 9 meters in height, and has cultivation shelves of 400 lanes. The harvesting can be done after nearly 18 days of plantation. Because of the usage of robots, less than half the number of workers is required, and the introduction of harmful bacteria which workers can carry is also prevented. The Green Crocs factory will be using Philips’s 13,000, plant growth for LED lighting, the company’s “production module”. Production module is equipped with a LED chip of red / white / far-infrared. They have adopted far-red wavelengths of light for the optimal development of the plant. In comparison to the conventional fluorescent lamps, the usage of production module leads to a 55% reduction in power consumption. The leafy vegetables produced in the Green Crocs Factory with the brand name of “Gauken Greens” will be up for sale from October.
