Japan Has Big Plans for a Super Cool Underwater City

ocean-spiral-shimizu-1Wild ambition often leads to some pretty radical developments and some of those include building expansive underwater hotels and if the Japanese have it their way, a whole city. But it’s also ambition that takes an idea that’s perhaps already in motion and builds upon it making it bigger and maybe better than the original.

ocean-spiral-shimizu-2-690x427Taking its cue from upcoming projects like the Water Discus Hotel the Japanese developers i.e. Shimizu Corporation’s goal, is to go a few steps further with a complete, state-of-the-art, futuristic looking, fully fledged underwater city. Based on the renderings and talks, the city, should it get the green light, could be constructed by 2035. Starting from a large sphere (about four football fields in length) and winding its way down to the ocean floor, this city would be home to businesses and homes for up to 5000 people. The space would also contain hotels of course, for those who wish to experience this marvel. Set to be positioned somewhere off the coast of Japan, this awesome city would be powered by what’s being dubbed an ‘Earth Factory’ designed to recycle CO2. Water Supply and electricity would extend almost two miles deep into the sea.

ocean-spiral-shimizu-3-690x442Suffice to say that this is still in the drawing board phase. There is however a potential for such undersea living quarters. With population exploding at an exponential rate and land prices being as high as they are due to the lack space, what better place to start exploring for the next generation of liveable possibilities. The question is, will it prove more feasible that living on another planet. I wonder…
