K5 Security Guard Robot by Knightscope has arrived in Silicon Valley

k5-security-guard-robot-1We told you about Robots selling Nescafe vending machines in Japan just a few days ago, guess what Japan is not the only country using robots as cheap labour. Microsoft has deployed four Dalek lookalike security robots in its Silicon Valley campus. The robots which have a striking resemblance to Dalek (killer from the science fiction show Doctor Who) are a good 5 feet tall and weigh 136 kgs. A California start up called Knightscope has made this scary looking K5 robot, K5 as four cameras and microphones on each side, a laser rangefinder and GPS to help with navigation and weather sensors. No, no don’t you try to touch it or play with it, it will scream, we mean let out a loud beep! Thank Christ that it does not carry a weapon! The best feature of the robot is that its battery lasts for one whole day, and it can be recharged fully in just 15 to 20 minutes. And it can go to the charging point by itself when the battery is running low.

The idea of deploying robots as security guards is in one way good as it is cost effective and guarantees lesser risks. We would like to see more of them at may be malls and railway stations. Which human wants to be a security guard anyway!
