LG likes curves just as much as we do. And no, we aren’t talking metaphorically. The consumer electronics firm has shown interest in curved and flexible displays before with the launch of the G Flex smartphone. To keep its interest in curves alive, the company has recently announced that it’s now capable of creating an 18-inch OLED panel that has enough give and flexibility to roll into a tube that’s a mere 3cm across! Simply put, in the near future, every time you’re done watching your fill of television, all you need to do is pick up your display panel, roll it up like a mat and tuck it away.
And if that isn’t extremely amazing, we sincerely don’t know what is! The current prototype that LG has been cheekily holding up for everyone to see has a resolution of 1,200 x 810. LG Display’s SVP and Head of R&D, In-Byung Kang, says, “By 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches.” All of this sounds quite promising and will pave the way for future technology that’ll be a lot more portable and a lot less chunky that it is today. In the meanwhile, we’ll spend our time daydreaming about smartphones that fold up like handkerchiefs.
