MG 1.7 Quasi Ribbon Speakers Will Envelop You in Sound From Top to Bottom

maggie.jpgUS-based, Magnepan International, have over 40 years experience in audio technology, yet they have really broken the mold with their most recent speaker. The MG 1.7 employs something called quasi-ribbon technology, which apparently gives lends audio height, stereo width and depth by projecting sound from the top down. Here comes the techie bit – quasi ribbon technology is a magnetically suspended piece of 0.001 inch thick aluminum foil. It is mounted on a 0.0005 inch thick substrate, which acts as a signal conductor. The foil transmits the signal across the surface of a taught film diaphragm, which in turn vibrates to produce an extremely wide frequency sound band width.

The 1.7 has a frequency of between 40Hz and 22kHz +/- 3dB, 86dB/500Hz /2.83v sensitivity. The MG 1.7
is available from US$1,995 a pair. The speaker will also require an amplifier that can manage 4 ohms.
