Well Microsoft bit the bullet and has finally conceded to get rid of the ridiculous DRM feature that was going to be built in to their upcoming Xbox One console. No wonder Sony sat through it all with a big grin on their face as their PS4 stood handsomely in the spotlight. Having learned their lesson, Microsoft issued a statement stating that the new way was not the best way and game sharing will be pretty much the same as it is now – discs can be exchanged, no online titles can be shared/resold, and discs will need to be in the device for playing. Also, you won’t need an online connection or “check-in” with the Microsoft servers every 24 hours to enjoy your games.
Post E3 2013’s announcement and spectacle that left Sony PS fans a lot happier than Xbox loyalists (and that’s an understatement) MS took a full U turn. Their official word on their blog was that the change of heart was due to feedback considered from the Xbox community. No D-uh! As long as you have a legit disc you can play the game without a net connection unless you wish to download extras etc. Thankfully even Regional restrictions will be a thing of the past allowing consumers to buy a disc anywhere in the world and use it anywhere else without an issue.
Will this put Microsoft’s Xbox One back in the limelight? It sure seems like it. Console gamers must be breathing a sigh of relief.
