Researchers at Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group have demoed a prototype 3D desktop which can be manipulated with your hands. The system here uses a transparent OLED screen made by Samsung along with Microsoft Kinect sensors to create a virtual desktop environment that users can manipulate in real time. There is a keyboard beneath the transparent screen which allows one to type as they’d with any normal computer. It is when they need to interact, the impressive capabilities step in like if you wanted to flip through a stack of files, all you got to do is simply reach up and move the virtual objects with your fingers.
The Kinect sensors, besides tracking hand motions, also make a note of the head and eye position, allowing the screen to provide a 3D image with perspective and depth customized to the user’s exact position. Do check out the video below to get a real sense of this system in action.
