NEC Research center has developed a technology which can enlarge a low resolution image without distortion and still maintain the image quality. Termed as ‘one super-resolution technology’ the algorithm analyzes and processes the blur and roughness of the image and expands it on the pixel level. NEC aims to use this technology for converting QVGA resolution (320×240) One-seg transmissions to WVGA resolution (800 x 480) so One-Seg enabled mobile phones and GPS devices can watch Digital TV in a much higher resolution. Coming to regular TV broadcasts and DVD saved video (720 × 480) it can be super sized 6 times the resolution to 1920 × 1080 pixels or Full HD.
According to NEC the new technology should go mainstream by 2009.
