New Software for iPhone simulates nuclear reactor core, impressive

The iPhone’s versatility is working its way into all fields and has now gone nuclear. Not literally of course but Apple’s favorite handset has a new application that’s been developed by the University of Utah’s Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute that’s making quite big news. The software is being used by the university’s Nuclear Engineering Program and it displays computer-generated simulations of a nuclear reactor’s core. It uses an iPhone visualization software called ImageVis3D Mobile (free via AppStore) and showcases a simulation of a reactors fuel rod assembly within the university’s TRIGA research reactor. This software is not commercially available. The researchers say that this software can simulate any reactor with the simulation software package and a lot more. Seems like a great teaching tool.
