Domestic sales of Nintendo’s latest portable Gaming machine reached 5 million in less than 13 months, after it’s launch in December 2004. “Selling 5 million units in less than 14 months means DS is the fastest among any game machines ever launched in Japan to hit that level,” Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told a news conference. Nintendo Gameboy advance took 14 months to acheive the 5 million mark and the popular Sony Playstation 2 took 17 months. Besides advanced video games with sophisticated graphics and realistic actions, Nintendo focuses on games for women, adults and seniors — traditionally non-core segments for game makers — in a bid to expand the overall game-playing population.
The most popular game being Nintendogs designed by Shigeru Miyamoto creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda and Pikman series for Nintendo. Nintendogs allows players to interact with virtual pet dogs. Over 1 million copies of Nintendogs are sold in Japan alone.
