Offshore wind farms, and for those who don’t know have nothing to do with keeping gas behind a fence at sea, is one of the better ways to utilize one of ole Mom Natures greatest gifts, the wind. Norway has undertaken plans to build a turbine that will be 533 feet tall and a rotor diameter of 475 feet which will make it the world’s largest turbine ever. Since it’s so super large this ‘blow hard’ will be able to generate about 10-megawatts to power over 2,000 homes. They aim to have it up sometime next year and it’s setting them back a cool $67.5 million for the prototype. Not that I know much about this, but the fact that this particular design floats makes me wonder. But it is supposed to be three times more powerful than current turbines so I guess it’s all good.
