NYC Buses to soon get location based interactive adverts

NYC buses survive partially on the revenue that is generated from the static adverts that are displayed on its sides. Not so far from now, we are going to witness a radical transformation on these sides. The adverts are going to be replaced by actual flat screen displays to show rotating static advertisements as well as short commercials. The screens can target ads for specific neighborhoods. The ads, which resemble TV commercials, could even advertise coffee in the morning and beer after work. Titan Worldwide has a 10-year; $800 million contract to sell ads throughout the city’s bus and commuter-train systems. The company says GPS technology allows it to change the ads based on the buses’ locations.

Currently NYC buses that feature the new ads are being tested on the Manhattan route. About 200 more buses will also get the advertising upgrade by 2009.
