A cell phone with GPS navigation is useless if you don’t have coverage range to go with it. Pharos Traveler 137 GPS Smart Phone is not one of these, it’s a phone that believes in offering an amiable approach towards this problem. Since the device is not tied to a contract or locked, you can use it with just about any GPS service in the world. The pay-as-you-go service on its Windows Mobile smart phones, initially offers U.S. maps and services free, however Canada, Western Europe, or Eastern Europe are charged at $2 per day, $5 per week, $7 per month, or $50 per year. China, Russia, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil maps will be offered on similar terms later. The only time you need network coverage is when you are downloading the maps.
The maps and location-based services on the Pharos Traveler 137 GPS Smart Phone are available only for the duration of access you pay for. Throughout that period the unit mimics a fully functional GPS navigation device, capable of generating routes and identifying your location, despite a cell phone signal or not.
Specs on the Pharos Traveler 137 include:
– Quad-band GSM handset
– 3.5-inch LCD touch screen and mobile broadband (UMTS/HSPA) support
– Two cameras: a 3-megapixel unit for capturing conventional stills and video, and a 0.3-megapixel unit for videoconferencing use
– The MicroSD slot supports SDHC.
– A suggested price of $600.
