Pioneer and Panasonic join hands to develop low cost Blu-Ray media

Pioneer Japan has joined hands with Mitsubishi chemical corp for the development of BD-R discs which use organic pigments for the recording membrane. CD-R and DVD-R discs are already made using this technique and once BD-R discs make use of this technology the prices will drop considerably. Prototype drives making use of the new media are already developed and it will be compatible with Blu-ray recording format ver 1.2.

The companies have also developed BD-R media supporting 6X speeds however it is still under testing.
