If only the rest of the world accepted empty beer cans as a mode of payment, we’d all be an inebriated lot. Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, known to be one of the world’s largest public celebrations with more than 2 million revelers partying together, has now turned the aforementioned dream into a reality of sorts, thanks to the efforts of Antarctica Beer. The carnival is always a time for heavy alcohol consumption and Antarctica Beer came up with a fantastic way to collect empty beer cans and keep drunken drivers off streets, by simply accepting empty cans at subway turnstiles as currency!
Dropping a can into the Antarctica Beer turnstile gives a single user access onto the subway system, enabling carnival goers to travel on the mass-transit system in exchange for an empty can! As expected, the results were astounding and the Beer Turnstiles boasted 86% more traffic than the regular turnstiles and driving offences were decreased by a whopping 43%! And that’s not all. The cans collected were donated to a recycling NGO, making this social responsibility campaign by Antarctica Beer an inspiration!
