Seiko Presage: Honoring Animation with Japanese Craftsmanship

Discover the fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship with Studio Ghibli’s beloved animated classic, as Seiko Presage introduces a limited-edition watch inspired by Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Released in 1984, the film takes place 1,000 years after the destruction of modern civilization in a war known as the Seven Days of Fire. In the polluted land, a forest of fungi called the Sea of Decay is gradually spreading and is inhabited by a species of giant mutant insects.

Crafted to capture the essence of this iconic film, the watch features a round, curved design reminiscent of tools from the movie. Its vintage-style case is adorned with a super-hard coating, mirroring the worn aesthetic of Nausicaä’s world. The uniquely shaped crown, adorned with a blue crystal glass, pays homage to the Ohms, while the leather strap, stamped with the Ohm symbol, adds a touch of authenticity.

The centrepiece of this timepiece is its pure blue enamel dial, meticulously crafted to replicate Nausicaä’s iconic attire. Master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his team painstakingly adjusted the shade of blue to perfection, ensuring every detail reflects the film’s aesthetic.

Powered by Caliber 6R51, a high-performance movement, this watch boasts a 72-hour power reserve and a display case back, offering a glimpse of the gold-colored oscillating weight and a poignant scene from the film’s finale.

Limited to just 1,500 pieces worldwide, this Seiko Presage watch is a must-have for fans and collectors alike. The watch is offered in a special presentation box with an illustration of a scene from the film. The box carries a message card in Japanese from the film’s director, Hayao Miyazaki. Available exclusively at Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners from March 2024.
