Sharp LCD TVs offer glimpse into future trends

Sharp recently introduced two LCD TV models (37 and 57-inch) highlight features that represent the direction of the LCD TV industry. All the LCD TVs Sharp will roll out in Japan in 2006 will fully support high-definition TV (HDTV) signals (1,920×1,080 resolution) compared to about half now, the company said. With over half of Japanese households now supporting terrestrial digital broadcasts, the age of digital high-definition TV is about to go into full swing. Although most of the 37-inch LCD TVs that are currently available on the market feature resolution of only 1,366×768, Sharp indicated that in addition to moving to larger sizes, high-definition is necessary and will be one of its focus for its LCD TV business. The company recently exhibited a 57-inch model for several reasons, with competition with PDP (plasma display panel) being a main reason. About 90% of the TV sales Sharp generated during fiscal year 2004 (April 2004 to March 2005) came from sales of LCD TVs and so the company may be more focused on developing the platform.
