Sony makes Xperia Z Ultra official, powered by very powerful Snapdragon 800

Phablets and ridiculously sized smartphones seems to be the flavor of the day, after Huawei’s MediaPad 7 Vogue we now have Sony making their Xperia Z Ultra official, but let’s not confuse the two as Xperia Z Ultra is class apart. Previously the smartphone was codenamed “Togari” and we covered all the leaks and info on this device as and when they came. But all we knew was that this smartphone intended to compete with Samsung’s Note III, and now that we have the complete spec sheet, it’s safe to say this device is garnished with some of the best hardware currently available. It’s quite a bit ahead of Note III and has been appropriately given the name Ultra.

Sony chose Mobile Asia Expo to launch the device and the two most eye catching feature of this device is its 6.44″ Triluminos full HD display (1920×108) and its Snapdragon 800 processor. The Qualcomm processor clocks at 2.2 Ghz and is blazingly fast and can support 4k video format which makes it “Ultra” cool. It gets a 3000 mAh battery, which might be lesser than Note III’ 3100 mAh, but Sony’s less gimmicky layers on top of Android OS and stamina mode will make up for it quite well.

Sony continues with the OmniBalance design with Ultra and shares it with its cousin Xperia Z. It’s built to IP55/IP58 specifications for dust and water resistance which makes it quite sturdy. With a 200g+ weight it’s quite hefty which might be the only downside. But with a larger surface it’ll be much easier to play games with on screen controls and to write and browse the net. The smartphone will come with Android 4.2 with all the usual Sony apps preinstalled, don’t expect it to be quite different than Xperia Z as far as software goes. The phone supports NFC which is has become a standard feature of all the Sony smartphones.

Xperia Z Ultra is expected to hit the market by Q3. Comparing it with all leaked info we have on Note III and Galaxy Mega 6.3, Xperia Z Ultra will sit on the top in this segment. The Snapdragon 800 processor has really given the smartphone some ultra capabilities and if it’s priced right Note III might look like a complete dud in front of it.
