Cabs in New York will soon receive a dash of technology with Square’s newest brainchild. As part of a test-run, 30 cabs in New York will be fitted with iPads encased in metal housings that sport credit card readers. These will enable payments made via cards to New York cabs for those who prefer carrying plastic money instead of paper cash. Once the card’s swiped, users will be required to sign their names on the screen with their fingers, and a receipt will be sent to the user’s phone or email ID. Called the Checker, the system will also allow drivers to interact via the Square application. And yes, Square has also ensured complete road safety, stating that this iPad-integrated system will be silent and not distractive to drivers.
