With the advances made in communication people have resorted to innovative methods to gain attention. This past weekend saw a blocking of cell phone texting due to the local elections in Cambodia. The government imposed a two-day ”tranquility period” to keep voters from being bombarded with campaign messages. All three major phone companies in Cambodia had agreed to block text messages on Saturday and Sunday. Officials imposed the ban based on a request from the National Election Committee. Though the ban may affect a certain section “freedom”, but by and large, commoners will be free from the clutches of unsolicited messages, which could ”spoil” the calm during the run-up to voting and on Election Day itself.
Voting took place on Sunday, and text messaging was restored after polls closed at 3 p.m. local time.
