Tokyo Subway Sandwich Outlet Grows its Own Lettuce

Tokyo is a city that could certainly do with a lot more greenery, but this latest initiative isn’t really what I would
have recommended to overcome the average Tokyoites’ skyscraper headache. In an effort to brighten up
their central Marunouchi outlet, Subway has started growing lettuce inside a giant, glass hydroponics cabinet
in the middle of the store. That’s right. The Subway outlet, opposite Tokyo Station, now has its own in-store
salad garden. The lettuce is being grown for use in the store’s sandwiches, but only produces about 5% of
daily requirements, which means that the remaining 95% is still being shipped-in. It would also suggest that
someone must be replanting new lettuce every night after the shop closes, right? It’s a very strange idea, if you
ask me, but would you expect anything less of Japan?

We cannot tell you whether Subway sandwiches using lettuce from the in-store garden are cheaper, more
expensive or cost the same as sandwiches using other lettuce. We are also unable to vouch for any difference
in taste.
