At the World Expo back in 1970 in Osaka, Japan, Sanyo the world’s leading consumer electronics manufacturer, unveiled their future product Ultrasonic Bath shaped like a pod-shaped washing machine that cleans, massages and dries the user in 15 minutes which is fully automated. The user had to climb a ladder measuring 6ft tall. After setting the desired water temperature and the main switch is activated, the pre-rinse cycle is started with the user being sprayed with jets of hot water for 5 minutes. The next step is where the chamber gets filled with hot-water for the massage for 3 minutes. An ultrasonic wave generator creates a ticklish cloud of tiny air bubbles that lift dirt from the skin. The next stage is the 2-minutes hot rinse cycle. The final stage comprises of a 5-minute dry cycle which blasts the user with warm air while a flood of infrared and ultraviolet light destroys any lingering germs.
The Ultrasonic Bath was a concept product which never reached any homes. Some years back though, Sanyo has unveiled the $50,000 HIRB (Human In Roll-lo Bathing) system which is compact and aimed at elderly homes.
