There is something cryptic about a beer that’s called Valar Morghulis, which roughly translates to “all men must die”, but most Game of Thrones fans won’t really give this a second thought before downing a pint of this bubbling ale. Unleashed like the wrath of the mad king Aerys by a New York-based brewery called Ommegang, the Valar Morghulis is here to give you something to do during those long breaks between Game of Thrones seasons. This isn’t the first beer inspired by the series based on George R. R. Martin’s fantasy novels. Previously, beers including the Iron Throne, Take the Black Stout, and Fire and Blood were released in collaboration with HBO.
The Valar Morghulis is recognizable by its aromas of caramel, toffee, ripe fruit, burnt sugar and cloves, malt, and bitterness. This one’s best drunk in a tavern by Riverrun or at the gates of Casterly Rock. The more adventurous kind can also consume the Valar Morghulis beyond the wall, so long as the wildlings don’t hunt you down for one of these pints first. The beer is best enjoyed with a lamb roasted by the fire of a dragon, or a juicy beef steak. Ommegang will release about 660,000 bottles which will hit store shelves in select US states as well as British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and probably King’s Landing too. Oh, and yes, Valar Dohaeris!
