I don’t think any urban city has been spared the peak traffic drive-time woes. Thanks to the heavy traffic during peak hours, many commuters either prefer alternate modes or change their timings to avoid the congestion. However driving through traffic may turn into a tension-free experience all thatnks to Volvo’d efforts. With a motto to ensure that by 2020 no one should be killed or injured in a Volvo car, the company is formulating a new radar-based cruise control system that features on the Volvo S60. This self-navigating car works autonomously during peak traffic comes with technology that can detect a pedestrian who steps out into the path of the car. Incase the driver is slow to react; the full braking power will be activated. Apparently the car will be able to stop and restart autonomously.
Previous radar-based cruise control systems have not been able to operate below 18mph.
A Volvo spokesman said: ‘This comfort-enhancing system now becomes usable even in slow-moving queues with repeated starting and stopping.’ A radar and camera continuously monitor the road in front of the car and the radar’s task is to detect objects and measure the distance to them while the camera’s function is to determine what type of objects they are. The new Volvo S60 will be launched in 2010. The concept is powered by a low emission 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection four cylinder engine, which produces 180 horsepower. Over all the concept is splendid, it sure will leave you room to catch up with the latest episode of a sitcom in your car’s cool multimedia system, but then again is that what we want?
