Whirlpool Sponsored High School Project Saves You From Stale Ice

Catch them when they are young and watch them bloom into great minds, that’s seems to be the ‘mantra’ these days. A high school project done by five kids (including Alex Kuhn, Jeff Zyla, Erik Carr, and Ben Crowgey) has resulted in the invention of a prototype of a system that mounts into ice making refrigerators and electronically detects the ice levels. The reason behind this exercise is that the system is now capable of producing any level of ice, rather than just trying to keep the ice bin full. This results in fresh ice every time you need it. The ice doesn’t get stale or clump together because it has been sitting in the bin for too long. This unique equipment “learns” your ice using capacity, and makes its predictions based on which the amount of ice to be produced is determined. Naturally you have an option to overrule the predictions and set your own specifications.

This gadget even detects when the freezer door is open, in order to prevent the ice from dumping while the door is open. The bar graphs represents the current ice level and current desired ice level. Well if this cool contraption has any commercial value, then Whirlpool will be one happy company.
