The first official trailer of the next addition to Marvel’s X-Men Series – Days of Future Past – is out and it looks like this could be a another major hit for Marvel studios. Director Bryan Singer who brought us X-Men and X2 is back on board. Although I’m not a particular fan of the past X-Men movies, or Superman Returns, his work on The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie seemed so to bring something more intriguing to the movies. IN X-Men Days of Future Past, Marvel has brought back a large number of the old gang from the previous X-Movies including Ellen Page (Juno) reprising her role as Kitty Pryde, Anna Paquin (True Blood) as Rogue, the luscious Halle Berry as Storm and Shawn Ashmore as Iceman. Also reprising their roles are Ian Mckellen (LOTR) as Magneto and Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) as Profession Xavier. Their past counterparts are played by Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) and James McAvoy (Wanted) respectively. Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies) will be back as the younger Beast as well.
Picking up where the last Wolverine movie left off – Spoiler Alert! If you haven’t seen the mid-credits scene of The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman aka wolverine aka Logan (the only more-or-less consistent character in all of the X-Men movies) has been called in My Prof. X (yes he’s till alive) and Magneto to help prevent a disaster on a ‘Mankind-hampering’ scale. The trailer talks of Wolverine having to go back into the past to rekindle hope in the young Charles Xavier and also help the younger Magneto come to terms with certain things to prevent the future from being ruined. Bishop and a few other X-Men from the older movies were also featured. I’m personally looking forward to seeing what role Bishop plays in all of this. For Marvel fans his role could vital to the story of what the future holds and why Wolverine had to go back in time. Another big deal, and that’s not a pun, is the entry of Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage into the cast as Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels. I do hope we’ll see a battle that will include the giant mutant destroying robots. That would have all the possibilities of making the Avenger’s battle of New York look like child’s play.
What irks me about the X-Men movies is the exclusion of one of their key players, Cylclops, his role in the moves has been grossly underplayed and could use a real boost. Being the leader of one of the big team in the Marvelverse, Cyclops has not been given the credit and position in the movies that he rightfully deserves. Killing him off at the beginning in the Last Stand was just wrong! He doesn’t seem to be features in this trailer which makes it only more disheartening for the character’s fans.
X-Men Days of Future Past has the potential to be quite as epic as the Avengers and post that, marvel will have to bring it’s ‘A’ game to stay on top and give us the same level of entertainment or better. It’s always a good thing to see more than one superhero and or villains in a single movie as it gives us an expanse into the world they belong to and helps formulate the storyline a little better. X-Men Days of Future Past is set to launch sometime in May of 2014. It’s going to be a long wait but hopefully between that future and this past, we’ll see a few more trailers make it out. That should give us more details and insight into what we can expect. Either ways, as a comic book fan, I’m hoping for the best.
